Course content
1
Basics to Become an Event Facilitator
Introduction to the En-ROADS Climate Solutions Simulator and how it can be used to make a difference in addressing climate change and climate-related equity issues. Build your own confidence in the En-ROADS Simulator, learn where the tool is used and practice how to introduce it to new audiences.
2
Energy Supply and System Dynamics
Explore the energy sliders in En-ROADS, with a focus on common questions like “What if we had no new coal?”. Discover the advanced sliders and graphs. Learn about the main system dynamics principles that drive the model’s behavior, including price-demand feedback, delays in infrastructure turnover, supply constraints, and more.
3
Energy Efficiency, Electrification, and Growth
Learn how En-ROADS models energy efficiency, electrification, and alternative fuels like hydrogen, with a focus on common questions like “How can I test more electric cars?”. Explore how economic growth drives climate change—and how climate change, in turn, affects the economy. Examine key climate impacts such as sea level rise, crop yield changes, and local effects on health and ecosystems.
4
Land Use, Waste, Industry, and Carbon Removal
Explore how En-ROADS models land use emissions, with a focus on frequently asked questions like “What would happen if we ate less meat?". Dive into climate solutions involving methane, nitrous oxide, and fluorinated gases. Also, learn about the nature-based and technological carbon removal methods represented in the simulator.
5
The En-ROADS Climate Workshop
The En-ROADS Climate Workshop is an interactive experience to deliver climate insights to your community – be it your workplace, university, social network, and beyond. We explore the sections of the workshop and cover facilitation techniques and methodology.
6
The Climate Action Simulation Game
The Climate Action Simulation game (CAS) is a unique group experience where participants take on roles of international, multi-sector stakeholders as they forge their way towards a global climate action plan. We explore the sections of the game, facilitation techniques and methodology.
7
Advanced Facilitation Techniques
Gain the skills to excel as an En-ROADS facilitator through this module. We will cover facilitation tips, teach you how to answer difficult participant questions, and more. An invaluable resource for you to successfully lead participants in your events and inspire climate action.
8
Model Structure and Testing (Optional)
This section walks through the model comparisons and the extensive testing that the Climate Interactive team has conducted in order to build confidence and improve the En-ROADS simulator. Also, some software mechanics and what's under the hood of the simulator.
Why Become an En-ROADS Climate Ambassador?
Although anyone is welcome to participate in this training to learn more about the simulator or run an event, our En-ROADS Climate Ambassadors (ECAs) represent a distinct cohort of volunteers who are committed to mastering our tools and spreading data-driven climate insights across the globe.
Becoming an En-ROADS Climate Ambassador takes significant preparation, and we only encourage applications from individuals who have worked through the training program and started leading En-ROADS events. Applications are free to all and we welcome individuals from all backgrounds and disciplines globally on a rolling basis.

Frequently asked questions
What is En-ROADS?
En-ROADS is a fast, powerful climate simulation tool for understanding how we can achieve our climate goals through changes in energy, land use, consumption, agriculture, and other policies. It gives everyone the chance to design their own scenarios to limit future global warming. The simulator was built by Climate Interactive, MIT Sloan School of Management, and Ventana Systems. En-ROADS runs online, is carefully grounded in the best available science, and is calibrated against a wide range of existing integrated assessment climate and energy models.

What are En-ROADS events and what is it like to be a facilitator?
There are three main ways to use the En-ROADS simulator with audiences: in a workshop, in a role-playing game, or in a student assignment. You can read more here and watch Climate Interactive's Executive Director, Andrew Jones, run a 15-minute version of a workshop to get a glimpse of what you could do as a facilitator.
How do I access the course materials?
To access the video lessons, quizzes, and notes in the course, first “Sign in” or “Create account” in the top menu. Once you’ve accessed your account, a button labeled “Enter course” will appear.
Is there a fee for the course?
No, the training course, the En-ROADS simulator, and all the Climate Interactive tools and resources are free to all, thanks to the generous support of our funders. While the Mastering En-ROADS course is offered at no cost, there are expenses involved in creating and delivering the program. Please consider making a donation to cover these costs and help keep the training accessible to all: https://learn.climateinteractive.org/donate.
How much time should I plan to spend on the course each week?
The course is self-paced. A good estimate would be 4-5 hours per week for a period of eight to ten weeks. If you’re joining ECA Camp 2025, expect a more intensive schedule—most of the course will be completed in about a month. After that, you’ll still have ongoing access to the course to finish any remaining sections and continue building your skills over time.
When does the course start? Is there a deadline to finish it?
The Mastering En-ROADS course is designed to be self-directed and can be completed on your own time. There is no start date, and once you access the training, the content will remain available for you with no deadline. Periodically, we offer live cohorts—the En-ROADS Climate Ambassador Camp. Over the course of the live training, participants take the Mastering En-ROADS course while attending live sessions.
What is the difference between the self-paced course and the live cohort (ECA Camp)?
The self-paced course allows you to complete the material at your convenience. The live cohort offers structured schedules, live sessions, group activities, and enhanced support over a set number of weeks. If you’re looking for a more immersive and supported experience, we encourage you to apply to join ECA Camp!
When is the next En-ROADS Climate Ambassador Camp taking place?
The next live cohort is taking place from July 1-Aug 1, 2025. We’re offering a month-long live cohort experience with interactive sessions, group activities, and expert guidance. [Apply here] by June 26 to join.
I missed the application deadline for ECA Camp. Can I take the course?
Yes, the course will remain free and open for anyone to take after applications to ECA Camp close, but you will not receive our weekly emails, a community for peer connection, and extra support to help you stay engaged and confident as a facilitator.
Can my colleagues, friends, or students join the training?
Yes! Anyone is welcome to join the training. Just share the link learn.climateinteractive.org with them and encourage them to sign up.
